Sno Balls and all that San Diego has to offer…

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

This morning started off with pancakes, chatting and the internet. I ventured out around the Gaslamp Quarter and found Horton Plaza that the shuttle driver pointed out to me (last night in the rain). I wandered and purchased some pretty hair thingees, a mud mask, foot thingee and grape flavoured water.

The highlight of my day was finding Ralphs. Those of you who know me best will know that I would much rather walk around a foreign supermarket for an hour than some museum. Foreign supermarkets are like Disneyland to me! I wandered around and found discounted sparkling water, Hostess cakes, green prawns and best of all, veges! I couldn’t sleep last night. My thoughts were alternating between moving to Prague, moving to Guadalajara and the fact that I wanted stir-fried chicken and vegetables. I think the lack of proper cooking facilities in my Lake Tahoe hostel has given me a craving for a decent cooked meal. So tonight it’s stir-fried veges, prawns and noodles. Don’t even get me started on why I’m not having chicken! I couldn’t just buy one piece of chicken…it had to be like $7 worth and I don’t think I could possibly eat that much (given I hardly eat meat at all).
On the plus side I managed to track down some Hostess Sno Balls as seen on Overnight Delivery starring Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd before they were famous (can anyone spell geek?)

I seem to be thinking more about moving to Prague than I am about moving to Guadalajara (which comes first chronologically)…probably because I know that I’m being picked up from the airport, accommodation is sorted, two meals a day are sorted and my days are filled from 9 til 6 every weekday.

Well tomorrow I’m gonna head down to Tijuana and see what they’re up to down there. For tonight I’m going to tap away on my laptop. And you can all thank Jas for me changing my photos posts. The photos are now clickable and take you through to the source image :) If anyone wants anything larger than a 1400 x 1050 let me know before I upload all of them :P

Only 8:30pm and I’m already sleepy…sigh…

What a day!

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

From Reno Airport:

Well today started off with a sleep in then some reruns on tv. I packed up the rest of my things and finally decided to venture outside. I opened the door and it was snowing!! Beautiful snow!! So I went out like a retard and smiled and took photos. I also saw my very first live squirrel ever :)

I managed to load my 30kg pack onto my back, grab my laptop and snow gear and check out. The manager called a taxi for me but when I realised he wasn’t coming to pick me up I reloaded my pack on my back (by the way, it is NOT an easy task getting a 30kg pack from the ground onto your back on your own! Then I schlepped all the aforementioned gear one and a half blocks to Harveys where my bus to the airport was running late. Now you’re probably thinking that I should just suck it up and quit whining…well you try lugging 40-plus kg worth of crap one and a half blocks in 6 inches of snow while it’s snowing and there is no footpath so you have to walk on the road and dodge the ski resort buses! THEN you can call me a cry baby!!

On a happier note I’ve been wearing the same clothes for three days now (underwear not included). I’ve got layer upon layer on and have slept fully clothed with a beanie on as my room did not have decent heating…for $19 a night I’m NOT complaining!

So it’s off to San Diego now where I’m sure it’s not as cold, but I’m sure my luggage will be just as heavy. I can’t wait to get rid of the snowboard and boots at least!

From Los Angeles Airport:

Well I just completed my first lone American dining experience. That includes ordering, eating, paying and leaving a tip. Of course I sat there for ages watching how other people did it…perhaps something I should have checked with Kat before I got here :)
In any case I think I did it correctly and am well on my way to becoming American-ised (ay dios mio).

Good thing my flight has been delayed as well coz I lost track of time while watching people getting the check and arrived at the gate (right opposite where I was eating) when my flight was due to depart. But now I have an opportunity to add to today’s post :)
I think I’ve got to get my randomness in check…must be old age that’s making me slip :P

Good news is that after my mushroom swiss burger and fries I am stuffed! So no need to hunt out somewhere for dinner when I get to San Diego. I can just find my room and crash…and wake up to a complimentary all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast!

Note to travellers: cherry (and I’m sure all other flavours) poptarts do not travel well…they end up crushed beyond all recognition.

From my hostel in San Diego:

I made it! It’s raining and the plane was delayed twice but I still made it!! If you ever travel into San Diego via plane don’t bother trying to call a shuttle like I did, just walk straight outside and a nice lady in a blue jacket will radio one for you :)

Last day in my snow-y paradise…

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Today was an overcast day at Sierra so not as fun as the other two days.
People always warn you about boarding near trees etc coz I’m not used to it (I’m used to dodging rocks and cliff sides, not trees) but no one tells you the real hazard of boarding near trees…they cast shadows and you can’t see the terrain you’re about to ride over. So today was good in a way coz the whole mountain was a shadow and I could see what I was about to scoot over.

As it was my third day I decided to take it easy (I know, I’m an old woman already). I actually fell asleep on a deckchair for a while…good fun!

Oh, and I forgot to mention retarded mistake number 1 for the day. My sock felt like it was bunched up so once I got to the top of the lifts I sat down and took my boot off to adjust it…when I reached inside my boot there was a funny flap of something in there…so I tried to straighten it out…then I just pulled it out. Turns out it was the boa repair kit in there complete with screwdriver! Oh dear…I really just admitted that…

Go Sierra Go!!!

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Okay…I’m have officially been converted! Sierra was O for awesome today!! Their black diamond runs were the BEST!! From what I can tell (from only one day at each) you go to Heavenly for the amazing views and powdery snow and you go to Sierra for the fantastic runs!

I didn’t take nearly as many pics today coz I was too busy on the runs. This morning I went down the steepest blue run EVER. I stood at the top and thought. “Sweet Moses!” It was SO a black run by anyone’s standards!!
Sierra’s black runs are awesome. all of their runs are actually. They’re really wide…like SUPER wide. And they’re looooooong!! On some of the black runs I was thinking, “When is it gonna end?!” There’s only so much I can handle!!

By the way, Sierra has the CUTEST rescue dogs! They’ve got little strap on ID things with their names on them and they just chill out all day just waiting for an avalanche (which apparently hasn’t happened yet this season).

At lunchtime I found that they have deckchairs here! Real live deckchairs and sun loungers! They even had a guy sunning himself with his shirt off. If you took away the snow and mountain and beanies you’d swear you were at the beach :)
This only further reinforces that my bikin-in-the-snow shot is a good idea!

Oh, and the weirdest thing about American skiers is their complete disregard for safety. In NZ we put the bar down to stop ourselves from hurtling to the ground…here I put the bar down and I received the comment, “I didn’t realise that came down!” But my favourite was, “Does that make you feel safer?” I thought to myself, “Well it is called a SAFETY bar for a reason!” I don’t care how safe you think a chairlift is buddy, a decent gust of wind and I’m falling 20 metres! Add to the equation that I have about 7kg worth of equipment strapped to my foot and the likelihood of that happening increases slightly!

And how could I forget the guy snowboarding with a sling on his arm?!

Oh, and while I was wandering around Cecil’s Market I found Hot Tamales!! I haven’t had those since 2000!! Mmmm…cinnamon-y goodness :)
And when I was walking back from getting supplies (ramen noodles and Snapple) I saw a family walking along Stateline Ave. One of the kids was doing what I felt like doing…running from one side of the road to the other saying, “I’m in California…now I’m in Nevada…over here I’m playing a video game…now I’m gambling…”

Jetlag is for losers

Monday, February 19th, 2007

4 and a half hours sleep, 7 hours on the mountain and I’m back and already in my pjs.

Yesterday (well…Sunday) I was snorkelling in warm water in NZ, today I was snowboarding at Heavenly in Lake Tahoe. In short, today was awesome!! I spent the day skipping over the stateline Homer Simpson styles: California…Nevada…California…Nevada… I didn’t realise that the mountain was split over the stateline! The Nevada side was definitely my favourite! The snow was perfect. Light and fluffy and powdery and perfect! They even had some signs up that cracked me up. They read “CAUTION: hidden obstacles”…they were referring to the odd rock showing through the snow. Being from Kiwiland this is the norm, not the exception.
The runs were nice and wide and people weren’t too crazy either (compared to NZ). Maybe because it was a Monday.
I was also silly enough to end up with a slight goggle-mark tan before I put on any sunscreen…argh!!

Mini-drama: I was getting on a chairlift and the guys I was getting on with decided to sit down first…in doing this the one next to me ended up pushing me forward away from the chair so I tried to grab the seat and he grabbed me as we were about to scoot off…it was a near cliffhanger experience…awesome.

Tomorrow I might try Sierra for a cheaper option. And then maybe back to Heavenly for one last blat on Wednesday.
