Andiamo-s!

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Yesterday was fun…I fell asleep and woke up in time to stumble downstairs for my second shift (probably with pillow creases on my face). After my second shift me and Mads went to meet Tavo at La Radio and then we, along with an Austrian girl and a German girl, went to Ostia Lido to a club there.

Well, we waited for a bus…which eventually came…then waited for another bus…which eventually came…then broke down…then we got on another bus which dropped us where we were meant to go! The club was pretty cool…right on the beach front with indoor and outdoor parts. Crazy drink prices of €15 each!!! Needless to say I didn’t partake (which made it difficult to enjoy the house music that was playing).

We finally left the club and waited 20 minutes for the train station to open, got the train back to Piramide, got the metro to Termini and then home again to find Arthur up. Poor guy had so many early check outs he got about 10 minutes sleep all night!

While on the metro two guys started talking to me and Mads. Mads was very accommodating. I, on the other hand was too tired for stupid talk. When I say stupid I mean this is how the conversation went (translated from Italian to English):

ANNOYING GUY: where are you from?
ME (tired and clearly not in the mood for chit chat): New Zealand
ANNOYING GUY: OH! That’s in South America?! Yeah, South America!!
ME: No.
ANNOYING GUY: Oh no, it’s in the North!!
ME: No.
ANNOYING GUY: Yeah yeah, it’s by Sweden…north of Sweden!!
ME: No.
ANNOYING GUY’s FRIEND: Australia?
ME: Yes. It is near Australia.
ANNOYING GUY: Oh! said the other guy, near Singapore!
ME: No. Near Australia.
ANNOYING GUY: Yes, near Singapore and Malaysia.
ME: No.
ANNOYING GUY: Yes! In Asia!
ME: No.
ANNOYING GUY: Yes, in Asia.
ME: NO! In the Pacific.
ANNOYING GUY: Yes, that’s Asia.

Having no time for creepy people I eventually walked off to stand with Tavo and Sara and left Mads to entertain the other two.

In case you’re wondering about the title for this post, it’s what happens when you hang out with Italian speaking Mexicans too long. You start speaking Spitalian (Crystal understands):
andiamo + vamanos = andiamos

"He stole your lighter? Go to Denmark and get it back!"

Yesterday I worked at the mainly English speaking hostel and met a nice lady from Canada. Finally I met someone who agrees with me that English is a difficult and confusing language AND she could tell I wasn’t from Australia!! I really hit the jackpot on that one!

Then last night I made my “patented” carbonara without the pancetta () for me and Mads. I overcooked the pasta, overcooked the egg once it was in the pasta then made Mads do the seasoning so of course it was his fault rather than mine.

After two exciting game shows we headed out for Piazza Navona to a bar run by a Mexican guy where Octavio was working. We all drank, arm-wrestled, tried to dance salsa then left for the river.

Bonuses of Italia, you get to do the whole street drinking thing AND they always have gelato shops and pizza shops open late at night for your drunken cravings. Speaking of which, I wasn’t drunk (had to start work today at 9am) but I was definitely hungry and we came across a place called Pizza Pazza…how could I not have a slice?! Turns out it was delicious and I am going back!!

We all stumbled home at about 4:30am and found Arthur (on his first night shift) awake and sitting at the computer

Needless to say getting up this morning was difficult. The good thing is I only have 4 hours at one hotel then it’s back home for food and sleep before I wake up and do another four hours there. But at least I don’t have to venture outside again.

How do they shout?

I swear…common room conversations are the best!

Me and Mads were discussing the finer points of the Special Olympics and sign language. I mean, seriously people…why are there so many different types of sign language? Isn’t it bad enough that they can’t hear, but then to create a different sign language for each language?!

I’m also addicted to Italian tv. My favourite programme is a show where there are 10 people, one host and one contestant. The contestant is given a list of 10 characteristics, each one belonging to a different person. They then have to match up which belongs to which person. Some of my favourite characteristics so far have been: has 4000 chickens, has 18 brothers, WAS a man…

I also saw a parrot make a new world record by removing 20 keys from a keyring in a minute!
