mileage

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Seriously, who would have thought about ‘food miles’? I didn’t realise that that was the big deal about eating local produce. It makes sure that your food isn’t flown in from far flung areas thus increasing your ‘carbon footprint’.

Is it me or are my cherry tomatoes from Spain cheaper than the local ones? Strange.

snappy

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

So you know you’re lacking in something when you’re standing in the supermarket, pick up a jar of gherkins, put them down, have a child standing next to you say, “They’re pickles.”, only to have you snap back, “I know. Uh…thanks…”

Thankfully I had a croaky voice which faked the existence of an “inside voice” (THIS IS MY INSIDE VOICE!).

Note to self: be nicer to strangers, especially helpless children.

cough cough

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

That’s right. I woke up on Saturday with a sore throat which slowly morphed into a head cold…awesome.

The weekend brought a trip to Borough Markets with Ed (chocolate fondant *drool*), DELICIOUS naanies chips and braai chops (no seriously…they were YUMMY) and a birthday roast for Ed’s dad’s birthday. So essentially I aspirin-ed myself up and ate my way through the weekend.

A few days in bed and I’m past the contagious stage I think. Boo sucks for germs!

olive

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

It had to happen. Slowly my dyed blue-black hair has been fading as I wash it daily and it has decided to turn a lovely shade of olive. Rather, green. I like olive better.

party on down

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

What a weekend! Ed’s birthday party wiped it out almost completely. Moggy and I spent most of Saturday blobbing and convincing ourselves that we didn’t REALLY need to go to the supermarket. More convincing and we were late for the train which was going to get us to East Croydon late. So we grabbed some chips and were even later.

Frivolity and drinks were flowing a plenty and apparently all in the direction of the birthday boy

I must say that the childhood pictures of Eddy were my favourite part of the evening. Fingers-crossed I can get that one of him playing cricket in the nick.

small victories

Friday, January 18th, 2008

This has been a bad food week. Tuesday was Mango Tree for Ed’s birthday, Wednesday was curry for Ed’s family birthday, last night was Chiquito with Jo & co and tonight is Thai with Saima & co. I can’t wait for my gym membership to start again and for all this craziness to stop! I’m just glad I had the foresight to put it on hold for two months!

Just checked my Aussie credit card statement and found that I have made a small victory in the world of ThomsonFly. Seeing as they cancelled my flight back from Prague they refunded the money back to my account. Being curious I checked to see how much it cost me in the first place… Originally it set me back $153.99 Australian and they refunded me $176.13. A small yet satisfactory victory (never mind the £180 I had to spend on my flight back by booking at the last minute!!!).

Happy Birthday Ed!

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

That’s right, it’s Ed’s birthday and I will refrain from all jokes referring to him getting old. I’ll leave that up to his friends.

Life has been chugging along nicely with the usual annoying people on the tube (that girl should learn that swearing at strangers is not becoming and that woman, who not only leant against the pole during rush hour but stomped on my foot with her stiletto heel because she wasn’t holding on, deserves to drown in a pile of read Metros! and unsanitised poles) and work.

What is different is that I am increasingly looking more and more like a girl. My eyebrows resemble caterpillars less and less these days and my clothing is slowly getting more girly (but still emo). What is the world coming to?!

The old health kick is also going well with relatively nutritious meals (aside from yum cha on Sunday…yum!) and I’m sure it can only get better once the first of Feb hits and my gym membership starts up again.

All in all the well-oiled machine is doing it’s job. Time for more inspiring things me thinks.

health kick

Friday, January 11th, 2008

After what seems like (and probably is) years, I have bought myself a proper wallet. Nice brown leather, a boy’s one of course. I’m liking it.

I am also quite proud of the meals I have been coming up with lately. Healthy yet not completely devoid of taste. You can’t go wrong with that!

Plus, my new obsession that is TheDailyPlate helps me track everything and make me feel guilty…the tried and true way to get healthy again!

microwaveable

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

On Monday I met up with Cynthia for dinner and wandering towards a closed Camden. It’s so funny – yet so normal – to see people from the other side of the world on this side of the world.

Last night Ed got back from skiing (lucky bum) and I made what I considered to be a healthy and colourful dinner. Salmon topped with a watercress melt, steamed baby carrots, baby potatoes with a herb butter and asparagus. Sounds fancy, yet it was all purchased from Sainsburys and almost everything could have been cooked in the microwave which actually quite shocked me. There was little to no clean up as I opted for the microwave option on the carrots and the potatoes, boiled the asparagus and baked the salmon in the ready aluminium container. Life as I knew it has changed forever – and I didn’t even see it coming.

The year in review

Monday, January 7th, 2008

2007 was a random yet good year. On 1 January I was living in Sydney, working at as a Website & Campaign Coordinator for a travel company. On 31 December I was living in London, working as a Digital Media Coordinator for a not-for-profit organisation. In between those two dates I started this blog, lived in four other countries, visited four states of America and snowboarded across two states of them in one day, jumped on stage at a Blink 182/Green Day cover band gig and won a poster, became a TEFL teacher, had a collision with a tree while horseriding in Mexico which has left me scarred for life (probably), learnt Italian, did my first ollie on a snowboard, had the worst crash ever on a snowboard, got photographed and fingerprinted four times, had my luggage lost three times, visited Germany 3 times, visited Prague for the first time, killed a camera, a cellphone and almost a whole laptop, bought a new camera, cellphone and laptop, didn’t dye my hair for 348 days and had three winters and two (almost three) snowboarding seasons (score!).

All in all it was an awesome year (I can say that now it is over).
