She took the midnight train goin’ anywhere

Friday, August 5th, 2011

Actually it was the 2330 train but Journey didn’t take that into consideration when writing their song.

So I finally got to try out an Asian overnight sleeper train. I was expecting cabins with four beds in each but instead I was greeted with beds lining the entire carriage.

overnight sleeper train beds

I actually prefer it this way. I had the good sense to pay a few extra Ringgit and get a bottom bed. The top beds looked cramped at best.

My granddad had warned me of how dirty the trains are. I just figured that was back in the day and compared to his 5-star hotel standards. As it turns out it my bed was clean, albeit a little small once I dumped my bags at the end.

I drew the curtains and hunkered down for the night.

The downside of travelling on your own

I woke up at 5:30am, a full hour before we were due to pull into KL. At around 6:25am we pull into a station but I can’t see the sign of where we are and hardly anyone is getting off. After sticking my head out of the train multiple times we just pull away leaving me thinking, “Am I on my way to Thailand now?!”

It’s time like this where it’s nice to travel with someone so that if you really are on your way to some foreign land that isn’t where you’re supposed to be going, at least there’s someone else in the same boat, up the same creek, also without a paddle.

Turns out that KL was the last stop and the train was running about 15 minutes late. Still, it was a tense 15 minutes wondering how I was going to get from Dog knows where back to KL.

Like coming home, almost

Getting in KL was almost like coming home. The money looked familiar, I knew where the monorail station was, I knew how to get to the hostel without even glancing at a map… If only I hadn’t arrived so fricken early (pre-8am) then I wouldn’t have had to find ways to entertain myself until 1pm when I was allowed to check-in.

Breakfast burgers, take II

Good ole Macca’s is right next door to the hostel so I popped in for a quick brekkie and some free wifi. Did you know that they have filet o’ fish on the breakfast menu as a standard?! That’s right, I’ll have a 7:46am filet o’ fish, please!

Killing time

Wandering around BB and Sungwei Plaza made up the rest of my morning. Oh, and stopping off for some cheeky roti canai… At only RM2 for two pieces with the sauce you can’t go wrong! I’m dragging Kris here every morning for this trip! Sure beats the toast breakfast at the hostel!

Speaking of which, Kris just got on the plane from Hong Kong to KL so I’ll be seeing him very soon. Woo!

Singapore, for one night only

I spent the 10.5 hour flight from Auckland to Singapore alternating between season three of The Inbetweeners, The Infidel, My Chemical Romance, Danny Wallace’s audio books, a BK triple cheeseburger and sleeping.

Jetstar’s version of first class comfort

When I checked in online I picked a seat in an empty middle row in the hope that it would remain that way. And waddya know, it stayed empty. So all 158cm of me stretched out and enjoyed the flight in can’t-touch-both-end-armrests-at-the-same-time comfort. Aaaaahhhhh…

When in Singapore…

As soon as I cleared customs and was out in the land of the living I head straight for the nearest place that served laksa. $3.90SGD for a bowl of lovely Singapore laksa. Om nom nom… enough said.

SMRT

I hauled ass onto the MRT with my gigantic bags in tow and rode three trains all the way to Woodlands station. The most disappointing part of the trip was the lack of the train song I heard when I was here last year :(

And the dumbest thing I did was ride the entire journey without taking my 20kg pack off. My poor feet we bright red and not very happy with me.

Woodlands MRT station

Thankfully Woodlands MRT station had a mall with lots of food and shopping options so I went for a peach Yami Yoghurt and a Long John Silver fish & chicken combo.

911 (bus)

I got to the bus stop in time to catch the 911 bus to the Woodlands train checkpoint. Whoever decided to close the train station that was in town has made me a very unhappy bunny. But I did get to meet a nice man who told me which stop to get off at without me having to ask – the main reason I hate buses is coz at nighttime it’s tough trying to see when you’re meant to get off! Trains just stop. Sheldon’s got the right idea.
