  3. watching Billie Joe forget his lyrics after getting another kid to sing the first part of Longview

back in the land of the living

A flight all the way from London and I’m back on NZ soil. Not one day back and I was already being infuriated by people at Immigration NZ. How people actually trying to immigrate to New Zealand put up with it I don’t know. I’m from here and I feel like stapling things to certain employees’ foreheads.

Other than the shock of the last minute trip to Wellington (who knew you had to apply for a Tier 1 visa online?!) it was a great stop. I got to see Karin and Jason and their new cat. Managed to meet up with Jo for coffee before my dreaded biometrics appointment then Nick for lunch.

Thank goodness I managed to get an über cheap bus to Napier (only $25 with a YHA card). The only downside was the char siu pork mum made for my return had to be saved for the next day due to stupid travel sickness.

Now off to pack for my snow trip and drive up to Auckland to meet Eddy… yay!!!

constantly playing catch-up

Last weekend was the Henley festival. My gosh, the politically incorrect (?) comedian was O for awesome!

Now I’m in Mannheim visiting Conny and have been very good with my lack of shopping

Rome, Paris, Lille, Brussels, Lille

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Planning a trip isn’t as easy as it seems. Why can’t flight prices stay the same? And why can’t Eurostar prices keep still while I try to decide which ones I want?! It’s looking like Lille in April at the moment… that will change by the morning.

I won’t know before then anyways coz I think I broke the website.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

New Year’s Eve day we went to Kutná Hora to see the ossuary there and eat Czech food and have a walk around the town.

New Year’s was random crazy in Prague! We were actually pretty sleepy and didn’t feel like going out (sad sacks) but how often are you in Prague for New Year’s and how often do you spend two years planning it?! So out we went into a square nearby our hostel and fireworks were going off everywhere just like the websites told me. People were letting them off left, right and centre. Absolute mayhem. A real difference compared to the safe pyrotechnics let off in Wellington Harbour… The major difference was the lack of pretty sparkle and more loud bang. Maybe it’s because it’s the closest I’ve been to real fireworks (not those kiddie safe ones that they sell in NZ). It was an early night but a good one nonetheless.

Unfortunately since the Czech Republic joined the EU prices have soared. I knew it wasn’t going to be as cheap as it used to be but I was not prepared for UK prices! £4 for a large McChicken combo, that’s more expensive than here! Go figure.

Also interesting to note was the huge number of Italians (and Kiwis) in Prague! I had fun explaining “Dog’s Bollocks” to a group of Italian guys who had a guy in the group whose nickname was “cane”.

The best thing about New Year’s in Prague was the fact that we woke up to snow on the 1st! And it doesn’t usually snow in Prague at this time of year but what a way to start the year!! It’s gonna be a great year!

trust me

Now why would my texts to Jarrad be failing?

Trust me to go for a wander and find an emo store in Prague! Bought a weird t-shirt that says, “bad boy play to bathe”?! Also picked up a cool green top and a green hat with matching gloves. This shopping habit had got to slow down eventually! Maybe once I stop travelling to Europe…

I don't speak Czech

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Maybe I should have splashed out and got a phrasebook that tells you how to say “I don’t speak Czech.” I guess it’s kind of implied when you respond in English though.

It cost me a grand total of 20Kč for my 90 minute bus/metro/tram ticket which gets me within 10 minutes of my hostel. That’s about 58p or 1.53NZD. Slightly better than the £2 tube ride and £7 esaybus to Stansted…but it’s all just apples and oranges.

Did I forget the minus degree weather I am enjoying (while it’s still sunny!)? If only I remembered my gloves…

blasé

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

It was over two years ago that I planned this new year’s. Only I was meant to be living in Prague, NOT London. I think it was actually originally meant to be last new year’s but I amended the date slightly…
It almost didn’t happen then I got a Gmail blonk from Jo while I was in Roma asking if it was still a goer… okay then!

Even so, as I sit here waiting for my gate to come up I am still as blasé as I am with any other trip. I always had suspicions that I was a drifter and this past year confirms it! I kind of like it that way.

Ist das nicht ein piece of chalk?

Well, we didn’t get to eat a hamburger in Hamburg but we had fun anyway! Benni met us at the bus stop on Friday, Saturday was easy going with a bus tour of the city and food. Saturday night had me in bed before 1am thanks to a little friend (now enemy) called Havana and Coke. Sunday was a miniature Wunderland followed by more food and a sleepy train, bus, flight, bus, car ride combo home. Good work on Stansted for having it’s supply of cute airport staff for both our journeys though…two thumbs up!

My weekend started off with a sad wake up call, albeit at 8:50am but still…it was a Saturday. I rushed around showering, buying presents, wrapping presents, packing… Then I dashed out to find rail replacement to Wembley Park. Sigh. Wait for the bus to come…and wait some more. Then got on the train to Kings Cross. Wait in line for train tickets. Sorry we don’t Solo card. Find an ATM. Wait for the guy to be free again. Make a mad rush for the train. JUST miss it. Wait for half an hour. Train to Royston. Rail replacement to Cambridge. Finally arrived!

I saw Mark almost straight away which was cool with teeny tiny Frank…I forgot how small two year olds can be! He was über cute although didn’t say a word to me the whole time and was camera shy. Baby Leo was sleeping when I got there and the house was silent…apparently a rarity (which makes total sense when you have an almost three year old and a three month old!). All was quiet until after lunch when Leo woke up. How cute was he?! Gigantic blue eyes and chubby little cheeks! Of course he cried within 2 minutes of me holding him but he stopped eventually. I think he was worried because all he could see was me and he probably thought that mum and dad had abandoned him to this complete stranger. I’d cry too.

We spent a great afternoon catching up on the past four or so years then it was off to March. Kevin picked me up but of course there was confusion in who was meant to pick me up so only Uncle Michael was there when we arrived. A quick phone call and Belinda and the kids showed up. Thankfully they hadn’t grown much in the past month and a half!

We went out for dinner and then home to watch the All Blacks lose to France. I actually felt a little sad and depressed afterwards. Obligatory texts to Nick and Stef and it was time for bed.

Sunday was a not so early rise but early enough as I woke up with a sore throat…note to self: must sleep more this week. Kevin caught me while I was having breakfast and mentioned that he had looked for flights to Spain for skiing. Onto the computer we went and I managed to snap up return flights for under £50 for after Christmas but before New Year’s. That week is going to be painful for me given that I get in at 10:30pm on the 29th and leave again the next morning at 7:25! Nothing a good lot of Czech dumplings and vodka won’t fix!

Back on Sunday after a day out with Uncle Michael as well but without Dominic (off on a Cubs expedition) and I was back onto a rail replacement bus to Peterborough then standing all the way from Peterborough to Kings Cross. Back on the tube, then one more rail replacement, just for fun. And home! A quick catch up with Meg (had it really only been yesterday since we saw each other?!) then early to bed.
