breakfast of champions

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

I’m not following the whole Olympics thing but if there’s one thing that I do follow it’s food and I wonder if I could deal with the Michael Phelps style way of eating.

Breakfast:

  • 3 fried egg sandwiches with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise
  • 2 cups of coffee
  • 1 five egg omelette
  • 1 bowl of grits
  • 3 slices of French toast with powdered sugar
  • 3 chocolate chip pancakes

Lunch:

  • 1lb of pasta
  • 2 large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayo on white bread
  • 1000 calories of energy drinks

Dinner:

  • 1lb of pasta
  • 1 pizza
  • 1000 calories of energy drinks

That’s 12000 calories a day. His stomach must be the size of a bowling ball! What happens when he stops training? How does he not throw up when he jumps in the pool? Should I start swimming miles and miles every day so I can eat that much too?

I’m always up for a challenge.

it's all welly-wanging piggy helium fun!

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Nigel and Sarah’s wedding on Friday was fantastic. Where else could you go for a welly wanging and tug-of-war?! Add a hog roast with perfect crackling and Pimms to boot and you’ve got yourself a party! Did I forget to mention that I got the furtherest of the girls throws with 16.10 metres?!

I now realise the problem of not visiting rellies often enough when my 3 month old cousin (once removed) is suddenly 13 months and walking. Scary thing was how much he looked like Jason… I didn’t think babies looked like anyone! Frank was less than impressed with me until the night wore on and he realised I was tall enough to reach the helium balloons in the marquee. He also warmed to Ed after he inhaled a few balloonfulls of helium and had a wee high-pitched chat with Frank.

Thank goodness for the Golden Ball being stumbling distance from the reception and for them doing a cooked breakfast in the morning!

spoilt

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Talk about spoilt. For my birthday Ed took me out for a surprise evening. Little did I know that not only would I be the proud owner of a new pair of running shoes and a giant fluffy bathrobe but I would also be having a yummy dinner at my restaurant of choice (mentioned MONTHS ago) and sitting watching The Lion King on stage!

This certainly beat my last two birthdays hands down. (No offence Eddy but you were only competing against a microwave pizza and an IKEA ready meal.)

the states

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I miss the fact that every restaurant gives you doggie bags. Granted it’s because of the enormous portion sizes but hey, I’m happy to have two meals for the price of one.

I also miss the bottomless drinks. Oh ice tea, I do love you so. Yet another tactic to leave me going home fat and happy but I could just use artificial sweetener instead of real sugar, right?

And of course, the junk food. Sno Balls are the best! Yet another trick to make me eat more and more but they are so delicious!

The verdict: I can only spend a maximum of one week there for fear of undoing any kind of progress I’ve made through running like a nutter on ye olde treadmill.

jelly

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

I made another shock discovery a few weeks back when I decided to make jelly for the first time in about seven years. Jelly comes in blocks here. Little concentrated jelly blocks. I thought I was missing something here but the States still do the powder form. Weird.

thighs

For the first time since I got to England I found chicken thigh fillets in the supermarket! Shock of shocks!

three crème brulees!

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Well, Lille was full of food, fun and randomness.

My goodness is the Eurostar quick! That’s all I have to say about that.

We got to Lille and went straight to eat and shop… no surprise there.

With our apartment’s reception closed (nice for some) we went and found lunch at a place called La Pizz. What great pizza and delicious brownies! We’d clearly stayed too long because they kicked us out… must have been their turn for an afternoon nap…

Our apartment turned out to be exactly like the reviews: in the middle of a building site. Awesome! The room was amusing. We couldn’t figure the key out and when we finally got let in by reception we saw a couch. Looking closer I pulled out the trundler bed. An alternative spin on the term “twin share”.

For dinner we headed out and wandered up a street looking at all of the menus outside the restaurants when a woman comes out of one and greets us and reads out the (French) menu to us in English and we think, cool. Dinner was delicious with snails to start, scallops and beef buorgingon for mains and an ice cream dessert for Moggy with crème brulee for me. Now, when I ordered the menu said that there were three flavours: chicory, berry and caramel toffee. I chose caramel toffee but waitress said no, there were three flavours. Okay… When it came out there were THREE WHOLE crème brulees on a plate… all for me!!!

the muffin man

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Simply walking from work to meet Eddy in Covent Garden sure does pose a lot more to write than one would have ever thought. I found my local supplier of chocolate soy milk… that’s what happens when you wander into the health food and supplements store.
I wandered on and saw a kid with weird pigmentation on his face. I felt bad for him. Then I got closer and it looked like sunburn. Then I got closer and it was obviously from skiing. I hate him.
Wandering on some more and I passed a guy with a small kid who decided, at the very moment that I was passing them, to spit very close to my shoes. What’s wrong with kids (in general)?!

Speaking of which, I went up to March to visit the family. Dominic was keen to do some cooking so we baked muffins (which were actually made out of a cake mix and turned into cupcakes). Highlight of my weekend: insisting to Dominic that I didn’t believe he “couldn’t” crack an egg, showing him the easy way of doing it and being almost as excited as he was when he managed it without dropping ANY egg shell in! It was exciting for me.

I'm dreaming of a white… Easter?

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Yup, it snowed on Sunday morning and Monday too. And it was cold!

Most of the weekend was spent with Meg, Polish-Mexican food on Friday, Borough market for souvlaki then onto Wahaca on Saturday and a home cooked breakfast on Sunday… I’m pretty sure we did more than just eat all weekend…

I am back at the gym in full force. I’ve made peace with the elliptical and am going for a more comparable exercise rather than qualitative one.

The cat that I now live with (I also moved on Thursday evening) is nutty. It’s still a kitten and is couped up all the time in the flat, 24/7, so I can understand why. The pre-6am wake up calls are fun… ahem. As is the jumping back and forth across my room pouncing on imaginary prey that of of course lives in a pile of rustle-y plastic bags. Yes, I enjoy living with a cat again.

Back to the old days… I got home close on 9 o’clock and cooked dinner. Who said the gym isn’t fun?!

half a kg of yoghurt

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Is it right to eat half a kg of yoghurt by lunchtime? It was raspberry if that makes a difference? I may have to ponder this one.
